Founded and operated by Marty and Debbie Kowalczik, this remarkable refuge spans 100 acres of peaceful forestland, offering a safe home to dozens of rescued animals — from foxes and owls to massive bears. But among all the residents, one gentle giant has captured hearts across the world: Jimmy, the 21-year-old bear who has lived his entire life surrounded by love and trust.
Born in captivity, Jimmy never learned the survival skills needed to live in the wild. Instead of being released, he found lifelong safety at the Orphaned Wildlife Center — a place where he could thrive without fear or exploitation. Towering over nine feet tall and weighing more than 1,500 pounds, Jimmy’s size alone is enough to leave anyone speechless. Yet, despite his imposing frame, he is known for his calm nature and deep affection toward his caretakers.
Jimmy’s days are peaceful and filled with gentle routines. He enjoys exploring his large forest enclosure, lounging in the shade, and savoring his favorite treats — especially peanuts, which he skillfully cracks open with his massive paws. Each of the center’s bears eats about 25 to 30 pounds of food per day, a carefully balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and proteins to keep them healthy and active.
The Orphaned Wildlife Center’s philosophy is simple but powerful: every animal deserves love, dignity, and a chance to live without fear.
