He denies taking part in human safaris yet testimonies and reports indicate otherwise

The tragedy of Srebrenica is one of the most documented and most severe crimes of the war in Bosnia. In July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces executed around 8000 Bosniak men and boys within a few days. The victims were separated from their families, taken into schools, warehouses, and open fields where they were systematically shot. Thousands of bodies were buried in mass graves, and later many of them were moved with bulldozers into secondary graves in an attempt to hide the evidence. International courts have declared this event a genocide, and extensive proof confirms the scale and brutality of the crime.

Because of the weight of events like Srebrenica any accusation connected to political figures of that period carries extraordinary significance. In this atmosphere of collective memory and lasting grief new accusations have emerged against Aleksandar Vucic. According to investigative journalists, activists, and several witnesses he is suspected of having been present in armed positions around Sarajevo during 1992 and 1993, in areas that are today associated with the phenomenon known as the Sarajevo Safari.

The Sarajevo Safari refers to claims that wealthy individuals from Western countries paid large sums of money to be taken to sniper positions from which they fired at civilians trapped inside the besieged city of Sarajevo. Some witnesses describe visitors who watched the city from the hills and selected targets from a distance. Other reports mention cooperation with local individuals who guided them and provided access to frontline areas. If confirmed this phenomenon would represent one of the most dehumanizing acts carried out during the siege of Sarajevo.

In this context comes the criminal complaint filed in Milan by journalist Domagoj Margetic. He claims that Vucic was present in the Jewish Cemetery area of Sarajevo, one of the positions that according to testimonies was used for sniper activity. His reports state that during 1992 and 1993 Vucic was on the ground and that several earlier statements he made about his role in Pale raise further questions. According to him there are video and photographic materials that need to be examined and that match the accusations being made.
