MLK Day protest in NYC to honor Renee Good, who was killed by ICE

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A march from Brooklyn to Manhattan will kick off on Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Renee Good – the woman killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.

The Arc of Justice, a Brooklyn-based social justice nonprofit, is demanding a transparent investigation into Good’s shooting and meaningful change that reflects King’s vision for justice. Protesters will walk from Cadman Plaza to 26 Federal Plaza, which houses immigration courts, starting at 10 a.m.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Sunday that an internal investigation is underway into the ICE agent’s actions in Good’s fatal shooting.

Other MLK Day events are being held across the state. Black Lives Matter of Greater New York will host its fifth annual King celebration and food giveaway at the Martin Luther King Jr. Towers in Harlem at 2 p.m.

The group plans to hand out 200 bags of groceries, including fresh fruits and vegetables, along with serving 200 hot meals with partner organizations.

On Long Island, Hempstead Village will continue its tradition of holding the area’s oldest MLK Day celebrations. The 33rd annual King Holiday Parade steps off at 9 a.m. at Hempstead Turnpike and Duncan Road.
