Couple Arrested after Dog Died in Yard in Extreme Heat
Bath, NY – A New York couple was arrested after their dog died in their Bath yard in extreme heat. According to sources, Theodore W. Furia, 35, and Nicole M. Wandell, 31, were arrested on Monday, June 23, after Village of Bath animal control officers found their dog dead from heat stroke on their lawn.
Furia and Wandell’s neglect resulted in charges of Failure to provide proper sustenance, a class A misdemeanor, and appropriate shelter for dogs left outdoors, a violation.
The couple had left the dog outside, without access to shade or clean water, for an extended period of time in “extremely hot” weather.
As heatwaves spread across much of the nation, it is crucial to ensure that your dogs are kept safe from the heat. Always provide fresh, cool water and shade. Ideally, dogs should be brought indoors to be kept cool.
Some ideas to keep outside dogs from suffering in the heat:
- A kiddie pool filled with water, in a shaded area
- A sprinkler
- Provide a sunshade area (shade sail or tarp) for dogs to escape the intense heat
- Freeze 2-liter plastic bottles and leave in the shaded area for your dog
- Ensure that the water bucket is weighted or otherwise unable to be tipped over – check often to ensure that it stays full and cool
If temperatures are extreme and you can’t bring your dog inside, please find someone who can care for them temporarily — no backyard setup, no matter how creative, can replace the safety of an air-conditioned environment.
