I’m 22 years old, I’m a Native woman, and there is something about my life that I have kept quiet about for a very long time.

I’m still a virgin.

Even writing those words feels strange because people have made me feel like it is something I should hide.

Whenever women my age talk about relationships, dating, boyfriends, breakups, and everything they have experienced, I usually stay quiet.

Sometimes they ask me why.

Sometimes they think I’m shy.

Sometimes they assume nobody has ever wanted me.

That isn’t true.

I have had men approach me. I have received messages. I have been asked on dates. I have had opportunities to start relationships.

But I always walked away.

For years, I didn’t completely understand why.

Then I finally admitted something to myself that I had been afraid to say out loud.

I’m attracted to older men.

And when I say older, I don’t mean a man who is just two or three years older than me.

I mean genuinely older men.

Men who have lived.

Men who have stories behind their eyes.

Men who understand that life isn’t always easy.

Men who don’t need to be the loudest person in the room to prove that they are confident.

That calmness attracts me.

That maturity attracts me.

The little signs of age that other people sometimes criticize don’t bother me either.

Gray hair doesn’t bother me.

Wrinkles don’t bother me.

A man being 40, 50, or older doesn’t automatically make me lose interest.

Sometimes it does exactly the opposite.

But people don’t understand that.

I remember sitting with some friends once while everyone was talking about the kind of man they wanted.

One wanted an athlete.

Another wanted someone exactly her age.

Another said she wouldn’t date anyone more than three years older than her.

Then they asked me.

I laughed and tried to change the subject.

They wouldn’t let me.

Finally, I admitted that I preferred older men.

At first they thought I was joking.

When they realized I wasn’t, the questions started immediately.

“Why?”

“How old?”

“Wouldn’t that feel weird?”

“What would your family say?”

“Why don’t you want someone your own age?”

I didn’t know how to explain it without sounding strange.

Because attraction isn’t something I sat down one afternoon and decided.

I didn’t wake up and make a list.

It was simply there.

Whenever I talked to men my own age, something always felt missing.

They could be handsome.

They could be funny.

They could be perfectly nice people.

But I didn’t feel that connection.

With older men, something felt different.

I liked listening to them talk.

I liked hearing about the things they had experienced.

I liked the confidence that sometimes comes from having survived difficult periods of life.

I liked conversations that weren’t constantly about showing off.

And slowly I realized that maybe I wasn’t going to change.

So I stopped trying to force myself to.

But accepting that didn’t make everything easier.

In some ways, it made things harder.

Because now I knew what I wanted, but I also knew how people would judge me for wanting it.

Some people immediately assume that a young woman who likes older men must want money.

That assumption hurts.

I don’t want someone’s bank account.

I don’t want expensive gifts.

I don’t need somebody to rescue me financially.

If a man lost everything tomorrow and I genuinely loved him, the number in his bank account wouldn’t suddenly erase what I felt.

What I want is much simpler and much harder to find.

I want peace.

I want loyalty.

I want maturity.

I want conversations with substance.

I want someone who can listen without constantly waiting for his turn to speak.

I want a man who understands that being strong doesn’t mean being cruel.

I want someone who can protect my heart without trying to control my life.

I want to feel respected.

And I want to respect him too.

I don’t want games.

I don’t want to spend every evening wondering why someone hasn’t answered my message.

I don’t want jealousy manufactured just to get attention.

I don’t want a relationship built around social media.

I don’t care whether everybody else thinks my relationship looks perfect.

I care about what happens when nobody else is watching.

Does he speak kindly to me?

Does he keep his promises?

Does he respect my boundaries?

Can I trust him?

Can he trust me?

Can we disagree without trying to destroy each other?

Can we sit together in silence and still feel close?

Those things matter to me.

Maybe more than they should at 22.

But that is who I am.

Being a Native woman is also a huge part of my identity.

My roots matter to me.

My family matters to me.

The people who came before me matter to me.

I would never want to be with someone who sees that part of me as an exotic fantasy.

I don’t want to be someone’s curiosity.

I want to be someone’s partner.

I want a man who asks questions because he genuinely wants to understand where I come from.

Someone who respects my family and traditions even when they are different from his.

Someone who doesn’t try to erase who I am.

And maybe that is another reason I have waited.

I don’t give my trust easily.

I certainly don’t want to give my body to somebody before I trust his heart.

That is why I am still a virgin.

It isn’t because I think I am better than women who made different choices.

I don’t.

Everybody has their own life.

This is simply my choice.

I have waited because intimacy means something serious to me.

I know myself well enough to know that I would become emotionally attached.

I couldn’t treat something that personal like it meant nothing.

So I decided a long time ago that I would wait until I met someone I truly trusted.

There were moments when I almost changed my mind.

Moments when I felt lonely.

Moments when I watched everybody around me falling in love and wondered whether I was being too difficult.

I have gone home after seeing happy couples and wondered what it would feel like to have someone waiting for me.

I have looked at my phone late at night and wished there was somebody I could call just to hear his voice.

There have been nights when the silence felt heavier than usual.

Those are the moments when doubt enters my mind.

Maybe I’m too picky.

Maybe the kind of man I imagine doesn’t exist.

Maybe I should just choose somebody and give him a chance.

Maybe everybody else is right.

But then morning comes.

My head clears.

And I remember something important.

Being lonely while single is painful.

But being lonely beside the wrong person would be worse.

I don’t want a relationship simply so I can say I have one.

I don’t need a boyfriend for photographs.

I don’t need somebody beside me just because society has decided that being alone means something is wrong with you.

If I choose someone, I want to choose him because my heart feels safe with him.

I want to look at him and know I don’t have to pretend.

That is what I imagine when I think about love.

Not perfection.

Safety.

Peace.

Respect.

Attraction.

Trust.

Loyalty.

Two people choosing each other again and again even after the excitement of the beginning becomes ordinary life.

I imagine simple things.

Drinking coffee together early in the morning.

Cooking dinner while talking about our day.

Going for a drive without needing a destination.

Sitting outside in the evening.

Laughing at stupid little things nobody else would understand.

Listening to his stories.

Eventually telling him every story I was once afraid to tell anybody.

Growing comfortable enough that silence doesn’t need to be filled.

That sounds more romantic to me than expensive restaurants or giant gifts.

I want the ordinary days.

Because anybody can pretend to love you during an extraordinary weekend.

Real relationships are built on ordinary Tuesdays.

That is another thing I admire about maturity.

Older people often understand how quickly time moves.

At 22, people sometimes act like everything lasts forever.

But it doesn’t.

Beauty doesn’t.

Youth doesn’t.

Money doesn’t.

Even health can change unexpectedly.

Eventually, all you really have is the person sitting beside you and the way the two of you treated each other through the years.

I think about that a lot.

One day I will have wrinkles too.

One day my hair will change.

One day I won’t look anything like the 22-year-old woman writing this.

So I don’t want someone who loves only the version of me that exists today.

I want someone who could look at me decades from now and still recognize the woman he chose.

And I want to be capable of giving somebody that same kind of love.

Maybe that explains why age itself doesn’t scare me.

I don’t see getting older as something ugly.

Getting older means you survived.

You learned.

You lost people.

You made mistakes.

Hopefully, you became wiser.

Of course, I am not naive.

I know an older man isn’t automatically mature.

Some men become older without becoming wiser.

Some older men lie.

Some cheat.

Some manipulate younger women.

Some specifically seek younger women because they believe they will be easier to control.

I understand that.

That is exactly why I am careful.

Age alone will never convince me that somebody deserves my trust.

Character will.

How he treats people when he has nothing to gain will tell me more than the year on his birth certificate ever could.

How he speaks about former partners matters.

How he treats waiters matters.

How he behaves when angry matters.

Whether his words match his actions matters.

Whether he respects “no” matters.

Whether he can admit when he is wrong matters.

Those are the things I would watch.

Because I don’t want an older man simply because he is older.

I want a good man who happens to be older.

There is a huge difference.

And if I never find him?

That question scares me sometimes.

I won’t pretend it doesn’t.

What if I reach 25 and I’m still waiting?

What if I reach 30?

What if years pass and nobody ever feels right?

I don’t know.

Nobody knows what their future holds.

But I would rather face uncertainty honestly than build my entire life around fear.

Fear of being alone has pushed too many people into relationships that destroyed their peace.

I don’t want that.

I would rather protect my peace until somebody arrives who adds to it.

I don’t need him to complete me.

I want him to complement the life I am already building.

Maybe he has been married before.

Maybe he has children.

Maybe his life hasn’t gone exactly the way he expected.

That doesn’t automatically scare me either.

At a certain age, people come with history.

I have history too, even at 22.

Different history, perhaps, but still history.

Nobody arrives completely untouched by life.

What matters is what someone learned from what happened to them.

Did pain make him kinder or crueler?

Did failure teach him humility or bitterness?

Can he talk honestly about his mistakes?

Can he take responsibility?

Those questions matter much more to me than whether his life has been perfect.

I don’t need perfect.

Perfect isn’t real.

I want genuine.

I want the man who can look at me without pretending.

And I want to be able to do the same.

Sometimes I imagine meeting him somewhere completely ordinary.

Maybe there won’t be dramatic music.

Maybe there won’t be some movie moment where we immediately know.

Maybe we’ll simply talk.

Then talk again.

And again.

Maybe friendship will come first.

Maybe trust will take months.

Honestly, I would prefer that.

I don’t want to rush.

I have waited this long.

Why would I suddenly hurry when I finally meet someone who matters?

I would want to know him.

Really know him.

What makes him laugh?

What does he regret?

What is he proud of?

What keeps him awake at night?

Who was he at 22?

What did life teach him between then and now?

What does he still dream about?

People sometimes talk as if older men stop having dreams.

I don’t believe that.

I think everybody carries some unfinished dream inside them.

Maybe I would want to hear his.

And I would want him to hear mine.

I want him to understand that although I’m younger, I still have a voice.

My age doesn’t mean my opinions don’t matter.

I don’t want a father figure.

I don’t want someone ordering me around.

I want a partner.

A relationship with an age difference still needs to be a relationship between two adults who respect each other’s independence.

If he believes my age gives him ownership over me, he isn’t the man I’m looking for.

If he respects me, listens to me, challenges me when necessary, allows me to challenge him too, and treats me as an equal human being, then maybe we have something worth exploring.

That is what people misunderstand when I tell them I like older men.

They hear the age.

I think about the person.

I think about character.

I think about emotional stability.

I think about patience.

I think about someone who doesn’t need chaos to feel alive.

Maybe somewhere there is an older man reading this who has also given up on love.

Maybe he thinks women only care about youth.

Maybe he looks into the mirror, sees gray hair or wrinkles, and assumes nobody could find him attractive anymore.

That isn’t true for every woman.

It certainly isn’t true for me.

I see something beautiful in age when it comes with wisdom.

I see beauty in a face that has lived.

I see beauty in somebody who has been knocked down by life and still chooses kindness.

That attracts me more than a perfect photograph ever could.

So yes.

I’m 22.

Yes, I’m still a virgin.

Yes, I’m Native.

And yes, I prefer older men.

Those facts might make some people judge me.

They can.

I spent too much time trying to make myself understandable to people who had already decided not to understand.

I’m finished doing that.

This is my life.

This is my heart.

And I get to decide who I share it with.

I don’t know whether the person I am waiting for is 40, 50, 60, or somewhere in between.

I don’t have an exact number written down.

I just know that when I imagine the man beside me, I imagine somebody older than me.

Calm.

Experienced.

Protective without being controlling.

Strong without needing to prove it.

Kind without expecting praise for being kind.

Loyal when nobody is watching.

A man whose presence feels peaceful.

A man who makes me feel that waiting wasn’t foolish.

Maybe he exists.

Maybe our lives simply haven’t crossed yet.

Until they do, I will continue living.

I will continue learning.

I will continue becoming the woman I want to be.

Because I don’t want to spend my youth desperately searching for somebody.

Love should become part of my life, not consume all of it.

And when I finally meet someone worth choosing, I want to meet him as a whole person.

Not as a lonely girl begging somebody to stay.

Maybe he will be surprised that I waited.

Maybe he’ll ask why.

And I’ll tell him the truth.

Because I knew that someday I might meet somebody who meant enough to me that I would be grateful I hadn’t forced myself into something earlier.

Maybe that sounds naive.

Maybe life will prove me wrong.

But right now, at 22 years old, that is what I believe.

There are millions of people in this world.

Surely wanting something different doesn’t mean I am impossible to love.

Surely somewhere there is a man who will read my story and understand exactly what I mean.

Not somebody who sees my age and immediately thinks he can take advantage of me.

Not somebody who sees that I am a virgin and turns it into a fantasy.

Not somebody interested only in my appearance.

I want somebody who reads all of this and notices the person behind those details.

Kaya.

A woman with fears.

A woman with dreams.

A woman who gets lonely.

A woman who laughs too loudly sometimes.

A woman who thinks too much at night.

A woman who loves deeply but chooses carefully.

A woman who doesn’t know exactly what tomorrow will bring.

I want someone interested in knowing that woman.

Because eventually the novelty disappears.

Then you are left with two human beings.

That is where real love either begins or ends.

I want mine to begin there.

So if you’re wondering why a 22-year-old woman like me is still alone, now you know.

I’m not waiting for the richest man.

I’m not waiting for the most handsome man.

I’m not waiting for perfection.

I’m waiting for connection.

I’m waiting for trust.

I’m waiting for somebody whose age shows in the years he has lived but whose heart hasn’t become cold because of them.

I’m waiting for a man who still believes he has enough love left to give.

And maybe, somewhere, he is waiting too.

If
