Trump DOJ Sues Los Angeles, Mayor Bass, and the City Council in Massive Legal Attack on Sanctuary City Status
The Department of Justice made a significant announcement by filing a lawsuit against the progressive leadership of Los Angeles, which includes Mayor Karen Bass and the City Council members, regarding the city’s sanctuary policies that the DOJ claims are unconstitutional.
To provide context, on June 30, 2025, media reports confirmed that the Department of Justice had initiated legal action against Los Angeles for policies that allegedly contravene the Constitution and undermine President Trump’s efforts to combat illegal immigration. This lawsuit was lodged shortly after violent protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) erupted in Los Angeles on June 6.
The lawsuit asserts that Los Angeles’s policies, which permit local law enforcement to decline assistance to ICE agents during raids, are both unconstitutional and unlawful. It argues that these regulations are intended to “hinder the federal government’s enforcement of federal immigration law.”
Additionally, the lawsuit claims that LA’s sanctuary policies “hinder the necessary consultation and communication among federal, state, and local law enforcement officials, which is essential for federal authorities to enforce immigration law and ensure the safety of Americans.” Furthermore, the DOJ alleged that Los Angeles had been undermining President Trump’s authority since “days after…the Nov. 5, 2024, election.”
