GOP’s Brandon Gill Calls For Deporting Ilhan Omar Back To Somalia
First-term Republican Representative Brandon Gill from Texas garnered attention by demanding the deportation of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar back to Somalia. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Gill shared a video featuring Omar, in which she appears to guide Somali immigrants—some of whom may be undocumented—on how to react if approached by U.S. immigration officials. He remarked, “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia,” which elicited both significant criticism and strong support online.
The video, initially posted by conservative figure Greg Price, depicts Omar advising Somalians residing in the U.S. about their rights during immigration enforcement actions. She instructs them not to reveal their name, immigration status, or method of entry, and to assert that they have been counseled by a lawyer not to respond to inquiries. Many of Gill’s supporters interpreted this as a breach of federal law, with some demanding her removal and a criminal investigation.
Gill intensified his comments by asserting that Omar should never have been permitted to enter the United States. His spokesperson reiterated this viewpoint, accusing Omar of placing the interests of illegal immigrants above those of American citizens. The spokesperson condemned it as disgraceful for a U.S. Congresswoman to allegedly aid in illegal entry and resistance to immigration regulations.
This controversy emerged just as President Trump’s new administration was gearing up to initiate extensive immigration enforcement operations. Tom Homan, the incoming “border czar,” indicated that while ICE would focus on apprehending criminals, all undocumented immigrants would be at risk of arrest. He pointed out that sanctuary cities would likely experience a high volume of collateral arrests during these operations.
