Top Midwest Democrat Resigns as Electoral Disaster Looms in Her State, Setting Up Massive 2026 Red Wave
The Ohio Democratic Party is set to lose its leader prior to the 2026 election, as she has announced her intention to accept a position at a Democratic political data firm located in Washington, D.C. Additionally, it has been stated that a meeting will take place in June to select a successor, potentially paving the way for a red wave in 2026.
For context, Liz Walters, who has held the position of chair of the Ohio Democratic Party since 2021, officially stepped down on May 6, 2025. She indicated that a candidate to succeed her is expected to be chosen on June 10 of this year. Walters’ resignation occurs one year before Ohio voters will elect a successor to Gov. Mike DeWine, who is ineligible for re-election.
In an interview with Signal Cleveland, Walters elaborated that her next career move involves transitioning to the private sector, citing both professional and personal motivations for why “this is the right move for me.” Furthermore, in a post dated May 6, 2025, on X, Walters expressed, “Making the decision to leave was not easy. It has been an honor, and a true vocation, to serve as the Chair of the Party that I love in the state I call home.”
Following Walters’ resignation announcement, she received praise from Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) in Signal Cleveland, who is among her most notable supporters. Sen. Brown, a proponent of a progressive, left-wing agenda, remarked to Signal Cleveland, “I’m grateful to Chairwoman Walters for her service to Ohio Democrats over the past four and a half years.”
