Ocasio-Cortez Changes Life Story After Her History Exposed
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a member of the “Squad,” is currently under fire for purportedly misrepresenting her background in the Bronx. She has since clarified that she was actually raised near the notoriously tough borough, rather than within it.
Ocasio-Cortez, who rose to national prominence following her 2018 election victory as a former bartender turned political figure, is revising aspects of her personal story after a recent report revealed that she attended high school in Yorktown Heights, an affluent suburb located approximately 40 miles north of New York City.
The controversy ignited after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded to President Donald Trump, who labeled her as “one of the dumbest people in Congress” in reaction to her impeachment efforts against him regarding his military actions in Iran. “Also, I’m a Bronx girl. You should know that we can eat Queens boys for breakfast. Respectfully,” the progressive lawmaker retorted on social media.
Shortly thereafter, AOC’s background faced renewed examination when New York State Assemblyman Matt Slater shared a photo from her 2004 high school yearbook. “@AOC if you’re a BX girl then why are you in my Yorktown yearbook?” Slater questioned in his post. “Give it up already.”
The intensifying dispute has led AOC to clarify that she was raised “between” the suburbs and the Bronx; however, this explanation has not been well received by some local residents. In Yorktown, citizens are criticizing her for leveraging the controversy in fundraising emails while neglecting to mention her upbringing in the wealthy Westchester County.
“You can tell right out of the gate she isn’t from the Bronx. Listen to her!” remarked retired FDNY firefighter Billy, 47, who retains a strong Bronx accent despite relocating to the nearby town of Valhalla. “Listen to us!” he expressed to the NY Post while enjoying a round of golf with friends in Yorktown one recent morning. “We’ve been out of the Bronx for years but we still sound like idiots! It doesn’t just go away. She doesn’t have that in the way she talks.
An examination of property records conducted by Lohud.com indicates that the Ocasio-Cortez family resided in Yorktown until her high school graduation. AOC was still associated with the suburban address when the property was sold in 2016 for $355,000 — merely two years prior to her unexpected congressional campaign.
Richard Kennedy, a local supermarket proprietor in Yorktown, asserts that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s limited time spent in the Bronx should not qualify her to represent the borough in Congress — much less to assert that she was raised in its challenging neighborhoods. “If you arrived here at the age of 3, you’re from here,” Kennedy candidly remarked regarding her Yorktown roots.
“Do you think she would take pride in being from Yorktown?” inquired one woman who chose not to disclose her name. “It’s a wonderful town.” Sandra Guarriello, a salon owner in Yorktown, commented: “I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t want to acknowledge they’re from here.”
